Pantone Reveals 2022 Color of the Year
Add Whimsy to Your Space with Very Peri
Pantone just announced its 2022 color of the year, a dynamic and bold periwinkle hue named “Very Peri.” The color falls in line with upcoming design trends toward bolder, brighter uses of color in the home. At the same time, Very Peri comes in sharp contrast to the Evergreen Fog, October Mist, and various green shades released by Sherwin-Williams, Behr, and other companies this year.
We spoke with our Vevano Home designers on what this means for the future of interior design, as well as how you can incorporate the whimsical Very Peri color into your home.
Very Peri & 2022 Color Trends
“Pantone’s color of the year represents the risks being taken in the design industry,” said Martha, head designer of Vevano Home. “The status quo isn’t cutting it anymore. People are tired of neutral, monochromatic colors. Where in the past you’d see this kind of color used as an accent, more and more of my clients are painting whole rooms or cabinets in bold colors.”
Although the color came as a surprise to many, Vevano Home designer Andrea guessed at the color back in October.
“My first guess was purple, and then green. I thought Pantone would go with more of a plum shade, but I think this is just as bold,” Andrea explained. “We haven't had a lot of warm, inviting experiences over the last two years—we’re isolating and staying 6 feet apart. I think Very Peri helps bring that warm and inviting environment back into your home.”
While the gray-green shades released by other companies fall more in line with the monochromatic, neutral colors of the last ten years, Very Peri attempts to bring more intrigue and personality to the space. Plus, the unique mixture of cold blue tones and violet red undertone makes Very Peri an exceptionally versatile color.
“It’s very versatile,” Andrea said. “You can play it up with vibrant colors for more of a spring, nature-inspired look, or you can keep the monochromatic color scheme and use the Very Peri as a bold statement accent.”
5 Ways to Bring Very Peri to Your Home
Very Peri deviates from the white and gray color schemes of years past, so it can be challenging knowing how to incorporate it into the home. However, if you’re ready to play with color and go bolder with your home’s style this year, here are some ways you can get started:
1. Two-Tone Kitchen Cabinets
Combine Very Peri with another recent kitchen design trend, two-toned kitchen cabinets. Two-toned kitchens feature cabinets with two colors, usually white and a wood-toned or vibrant accent color. Most two-toned kitchens use the base cabinets or kitchen island as the accent color.
As a general rule of thumb, our designers recommend the 60-30-10 rule when it comes to balancing your kitchen colors: delegate 60% of the room to one base color, 30% to a secondary color, and 10% to your accent.
2. Accent Wall
If you’re not ready to paint your whole room purple, consider painting one wall Very Peri for a unique focal point. Accent walls give rooms a sense of stability and help anchor the rest of the room’s design without overwhelming it. A bold new periwinkle focal wall adds more color and visual interest to the space without requiring a major redesign.
3. Shutters & Outdoor Accents
Don’t forget the exteriors! A relatively easy way to incorporate Very Peri into your home—and add a lot of personality—is to paint your shutters or backyard door.
4. Small Pops of Color
If you’re not ready to take the plunge into painting your whole wall, consider ways you can add pops of Very Peri throughout your space. Throw pillows, rugs, and even small accessories on an open shelf can go a long way in adding depth to a space.
5. Go Big or Go Home
For those ready for a more adventurous home upgrade, consider painting all four walls Very Peri! An all-purple room may be a commitment, but it’s bound to make a statement. For a moody look, pair your daring Very Peri walls with wood tones, taupe, and warm brass metals. You can also add vibrant greens and oranges for a more playful, refreshing aesthetic.
