How to Choose a Bathroom Faucet
Ready to go shopping for a new bathroom faucet? Here are some of the top things to consider before you make your purchase. Choosing the right options for these features will help you have a faucet that fits in your bathroom space and matches your home’s style.
Installation Types
Determining the installation type is one of the most important considerations when replacing your faucet, especially when you’re adding it to an existing sink that already has holes drilled for the previous faucet. If your existing faucet already has more holes than you need for the faucet you like, you can use a sink hole cover that matches your countertop to hide the holes you don’t use.
Single Hole
Single hole faucets are a trendy option for bathrooms. With just one handle, they provide precise volume and temperature control, are great for small spaces, and are the simplest to install. If you have multiple holes in an existing sink, look for a single-hole faucet that includes an escutcheon plate that can cover additional holes. Single hole faucets are fantastic for vessel vanity sinks!
Wall-mount
Wall-mount faucets offer a unique style to your bathroom than other, more traditional installations. Because they are hung on the wall above the sink, it can make countertop clean up easier and can be a great choice for vessel sinks. We love that many modern wall-mount bathroom faucets also include touchless activation technology!
But they do require a separate wall-mount valve and drain that most standard bathrooms don’t have. Make sure to check that you can add to or move your existing plumbing to meet the needs of a wall mount faucet. If you’re updating an existing wall-mounted faucet, you still may need to install a new rough-in valve to install the new faucet.
Centerset
Centerset faucets are a great choice for most bathrooms because they can work with both single-hole and three-whole basins. This style features a deckplate that contains the handles and spout in one plate that are connected so you can install them through one hole while covering up any additional holes your sink may have. Centerset faucets require holes with 4-inch centers, the measurement from the center of the left hole from the center of the right.
Widespread
Also known as non-deckplate faucets, widespread faucets and handles are mounted to the sink or countertop without a deckplate. Similar to centerset faucets, widespread faucets are compatible with sinks that have three holes because they come in three separate pieces: the two handles and the spout. Typically, you’ll need holes with 8” to 16” centers. This is one of the most popular types of faucets because they offer a more effortless cleaning experience between the handles and the faucets. They also are considered more luxurious and contemporary than other types.
Vessel or Single Hole
While most bathroom sinks sit within the countertop, vessel sinks are made with a basin that sits on top of the counter, requiring a taller faucet. Vessel faucets have an extra-long neck to accommodate the sink height and are usually single-handled. If you’re updating a faucet for an existing vessel sink or are choosing a new sink too, make sure to adequately measure so you choose a faucet that is tall enough. This type of faucet-sink combo is usually found in modern contemporary styles and makes a show-stopping statement in your bathroom—but that can come at a price. Vessel faucets are typically more expensive than other bathroom faucets.
Styles and Finishes
Once you’ve determined which type of installation can work for your bathroom, the fun can begin! Choosing your style and finish for your faucets can change the entire look of your bathroom, so make sure they match the rest of your bathroom’s design. Here are the two main styles of bathroom faucets and the finishes you will typically find in those styles.
“Your vanity faucet, shower, and tub faucets should all be the same finish,” Andrea says. “The cabinet and bathroom hardware can be a different color, but keep everything that has water running through it the same finish.”
Traditional
Contemporary faucets exchange intricate details for minimalist lines. Faucets in this style are sleeker and more angular, giving a modern edge to your bathroom. Like traditional style, contemporary styles often use gold and brushed nickel, but the most popular finish is matte black.
