What is a Two-Piece Toilet?

Two-piece toilets are toilets with two separate pieces—the tank and the bowl—that are bolted together, usually during installation. The ability to uncouple the tank and bowl offers a variety of benefits, including lower shipping costs, more size and style options, and easy maneuverability.

One-Piece vs. Two-Piece Toilet

One-piece toilets integrate the tank, bowl, and trapway into one continuous toilet fixture. Two-piece toilets are made up of two distinct parts: the toilet tank and the toilet bowl, which are joined together by bolts.

The main difference between the two types of toilets is the appearance and price point, with one-piece toilets typically ranging $500-$1300 on average and two-piece toilets $250-$700.

Because of their lower profile and seamless design, one-piece toilets work well in contemporary style bathrooms. However, modern two-piece toilets also come in a range of sleek, contemporary styles as well as traditional designs, depending on your preference.

In terms of flush technology, both one-piece and two-piece toilets offer advanced ultra efficient flush and water-saving options.

Benefits of a Two-Piece Toilet

Lower Price Tag

Two-piece toilets tend to be less expensive than one-piece toilets, especially when accounting for shipping costs. This is because two-piece toilets are shipped in two separate pieces, whereas one-piece toilets are heavy and shipped as one fixture.

Two-piece toilets come in a variety of style and size options. It’s also easier to find uncommon toilet rough-in sizes like 10” and 14” with a two-piece toilet. Because the tank and bowl can be uncoupled, you can even play around with different colored bowls and tanks.

Easy to Fix

One-piece toilets are more durable than two-piece toilets, but two-piece toilets have the advantage of being easy to fix. A broken one-piece toilet must be completely replaced. For two-piece toilets, you can simply replace the tank or bowl.

Important Toilet Dimensions

Before you purchase a new toilet, make sure you know the best toilet sizes and dimensions for your space!

The toilet rough-in size is the distance between the bare wall and the center of the toilet drainpipe, also known as the toilet flange. The most standard toilet rough-in is 12”, but 10” rough-ins are also common, especially for older homes or smaller bathrooms. Some homes even have a 14” rough-in, but this size is rare and usually requires a special-order toilet.

Seat Height

A standard toilet height measures between 15” to 16” from floor to toilet seat. However, the ADA recommends 17” to 19” for toilet seat height. In addition to being more accessible, many 17”-19” seat heights are considered more comfortable. Kohler, a company that manufacturers toilets, refers to this taller, optimal seat height as “comfort height,” although you may also hear these taller ADA seat heights referred to as “chair height” or “right height.”

Toilet Seat Shape

When it comes to the shape of your toilet seat, you usually only have two options: elongated or round. Elongated toilet seats are considered more ergonomic and comfortable to sit in, but toilets with round toilet seats can be smaller and more space-saving.

Maximize Your Toilet

Dual Flush

Dual flush two-piece toilets offer two flush options depending on how much water you want to save. For example, a dual flush two-piece Toto toilet give you the option to flush 0.8 GPF or 1 GPF. These toilets are often more eco-friendly than standard models.

Soft-Close Seats

Soft-close toilet seats are designed to prevent your toilet seat from loudly slamming down on the toilet bowl. Not only do soft-close seats provide a quieter bathroom experience, but the gentle seat hinges can also slow the wear and tear of your toilet seat, lengthening its lifespan.

Toilet Bidet

Bidets are a mainstay in many foreign homes and are becoming increasingly popular in the U.S.—and it’s no surprise why! Toilet bidets provide a more comfortable, hygienic cleansing experience than toilet paper.

Most modern toilet bidets and bidet seats come with a variety of customization options, allowing you to choose between different water pressure and temperatures and spray locations. Your toilet bidet might even come with bonus smart toilet functionality, such as an adjustable heated seat, automatic deodorizer, and even a warm air dry function.

When searching for a new two-piece toilet, keep an eye out for self-cleaning technologies like special finishes that prevent waste build-up or automatic sanitization after each use.

Yes, your toilet can even come with a nightlight! These luxury smart toilets help you navigate in the dark easier when using the restroom at night. Nightlights also cast a soothing, ambient glow in your bathroom for a spa-like aesthetic.
