Your Guide to Patio Sets & Outdoor Furniture

Outdoor furniture can transform your backyard, patio, or deck into a beautiful extension of your home. You can go simple and pair some lounge chairs with an outdoor fire pit, or you can go all out with a gazebo, a porch swing, and patio dining set. The choice is up to you!

We want to be your resource in understanding everything you need to know about outdoor furniture, from outlining what the best materials for outdoor furniture are to explaining how to clean outdoor cushions and other furniture items. With the help of our Vevano Home’s expert designers, we share different types of outdoor furniture and how to style it and keep it clean.

Elevate Your Space with a New Patio Set

A patio set consists of dining and side tables, chairs, cushions, umbrellas, and more. Because there are so many styles and design options to choose from, you can personalize your patio set to fit your unique style and make it as comfortable as you’d like.

When selecting a patio set, take into consideration the size of the available space that you have. If the space is large, make sure the outdoor furniture that you choose fills the space and has enough seating for the typical amounts of guests that you will have over. On the other hand, if your space is smaller, make sure that it doesn’t feel overcrowded with too much furniture or furniture that is too big.

There are two types of patio sets: dining sets and lounge sets. Here’s a brief overview of each.

      Patio Dining Sets

Dining sets are typically used for enjoying meals outside with family and friends. This piece of outdoor patio furniture should be comfortable enough for you and your guests to eat and converse for a couple of hours. That means that you’ll want to look for furniture that is made of metal or wood and is furnished with plush pillows and cushions on the seat and the back. These patio dining sets consist of five to eleven different pieces including dining tables, chairs, cushions, umbrellas, etc.

      Patio Lounge Sets

Another popular option for patio sets is a lounge set. Imagine a warm summer night, conversing with family, and laughing together. Your patio lounge set would be the perfect location for this. Having a sofa and comfortable chairs made of weatherproof outdoor furniture material would be ideal so that your furniture does not rust with rain or fade with time. These patio lounge sets can consist of a coffee table or a couple of side tables, chairs, a hammock, a sofa or chaise lounge, and an umbrella to provide share while enjoying your backyard.

If you’re looking for something a little more simple and budget-friendly, you can take a look at bistro sets. These sets are composed of two chairs with a table in between. Bistro sets are a great option if you don’t need a ton of seating, but still want to enjoy those summer nights outside.

      Common Patio Set Materials

There are several different types of materials that patio sets are made of. We have compiled a list of the top four best outdoor weatherproof materials.

      Wrought Iron

Wrought iron makes for durable furniture and provides sturdy chairs and tables. Because of this, cast iron furniture is more heavy, so if you’re wanting to move your furniture around a lot, remember that it may be more difficult to move. You will also want to make sure that your cast iron furniture has a weather resistant finish so that it does not rust when it gets wet.

This material is a very popular option because teak is the hardest, strongest, and most durable of the hardwoods. Because of its ability to last long, many people choose teak for their outdoor furniture. Teak is also less maintenance than cast iron because it is already weather and pest resistant. The natural oils found in teak repel water, so you don’t have to worry about it being exposed to the rain.

      Sunbrella or Olefin

Sunbrella and Olefin are highly-durable outdoor fabric materials. Both materials are fade- and water-resistant and hold up well under a variety of weather conditions—although we still recommend covering or stowing away outdoor furniture under extreme weather. Sunbrella tends to have better water-resistance, but Olefin is more durable and eco-friendly.

Concrete is a trending for outdoor furniture—and it’s no surprise why. This highly durable, versatile material pairs well with most outdoor materials, including teak and wrought iron. Depending on how you style it, concrete can add a modern, sophisticated touch to your space or lend to a rustic ambience.

      Synthetic Woven Resin

Who doesn’t love the look of rattan woven in a stylish criss-cross wicker pattern? Unfortunately, natural rattan and other plant fibers require lots of maintenance and are prone to fading and water damage. However, synthetic resin and plastic are wonderfully durable alternatives to natural plant fibers and can mimic the same classic wicker look and weaves you want in outdoor furniture. Look for synthetic woven textures made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) for maximum durability.

How to Keep Your Outdoor Furniture Clean

To be able to enjoy your outdoor patio furniture for years to come, you will want to take care of it properly. Before purchasing any outdoor furniture, make sure that it is made of materials that are built to last and are rust resistant. You can then protect your furniture from harsh weather by using furniture covers. We recommend covering your outdoor furniture whenever you are not using it but especially when you are storing them away for the season.

If you use pillows and cushions that have a protective case, you can throw the cases in the washer a couple of times a year so they look new again. If your cushions do not have a protective case or they are not machine washable, you can wash your furniture with the hose and dish soap to get some of those tough stains out of the fabric.

When cleaning your cushions, use a hard brush to scrub out those hard stains, and then let them air dry in the sun. You’ll want to make sure that you do this on a solid outdoor surface. For best results when cleaning your outdoor furniture cushions, use a pressure washer to get out tough stains.

The effort that you will need to put in to maintain your set looking nice will depend on the climate where you live. Be sure to research and choose materials that respond well to your location’s climate.

      Outdoor Furniture Styling Tips

Because there are so many options of what you can do with outdoor furniture, the styling possibilities are endless! If desired, keep your patio set in a similar style as the rest of your house and rooms indoor. For example, if you have a modern kitchen, pair it with a modern outdoor furniture set. There are also contemporary, coastal, rustic, exotic, and so many more styles. Pick what you like the best and style it with some matching cushions and pillows and your patio set will ‘wow’ your guests.

Another thing that you can do to spice up your patio set is to add a few plants around your furniture. Bringing plants into the picture will add more color and make it a more inviting space. For an extra sparkle, you can hang up a string or two of lights; this serves two purposes—it provides extra light for when it’s dark out, and it makes your yard look beautiful. These two styling tips can elevate the way your patio looks and feels.

      What Will You Choose?

Outdoor seating can be for everyone! Because there is a variety of outdoor furniture available, it won’t be hard to select outdoor furniture that you love. Select a patio set and style it from there and you won’t be disappointed.
